Parliament approves Justice Sophia Akuffo as new CJ

Parliament has by consensus approved the nomination of Justice Sophia Akuffo as Ghana’s next Chief Justice.

Addressing parliament during the approval process, the Minority leader Haruna Iddrisu declared their acceptance of Justice Akuffo saying “we strongly support the president’s nominee and that she is competent to work in that office.”

He, however, added that Akuffo was evasive with some of the questions she was asked by members of the Appointment Committee of Parliament during her vetting Friday June 16, 2017.

Justice Akuffo spent over five hours before the committee where she answered questions on the challenges with the country’s legal system, the regulations on lawyers advertising on social, the relevance of the Ghana Law school among others.

She is expected to be sworn-in by President Akufo-Addo as the next Chief Justice at 13:00GMT today [Monday] at the Flagstaff Staff House.
