Parents should discuss sex with wards – NGO

Mr Stephen Agbenyo, Executive Director of Savana Signatures, a non-governmental organisation, has called on parents to hold regular discussions with their wards on sex and sexually transmitted infections.

He made the call during an awareness creation event, where pupils of the Bagliga Presbyterian Primary School in the Tamale Metropolis, recited poems and staged a play over the weekend on the dangers of teenage pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections.

The event was part of the “My World and My Life” programme being implemented by Savana Signatures in nine basic schools in the Tamale Metropolis.

The schools include Kotingli Presbyterian Primary School, Kpanvo Presbyterian Primary School, Nyohini Presbyterian Junior High School in the Tamale Metropolis and the East Mamprusi District.

The programme targets the high rate of school drop-outs and teenage pregnancy and educates pupils on the need to ensure personal hygiene.

Mr Agbenyo said educating children about sexuality and sexually transmitted infections would ensure that children become assertive and knowledgeable on things that should concern them.

He said there is the need for environmental and personal hygiene amongst pupils to ensure a healthy lifestyle.

Alhaji Abdul Rahman, Tamale Metropolitan Director of Education, in a statement read on his behalf, commended Savana Signatures for the initiative.

He called on parents to support their children especially the girl- child to attain the highest level of education to contribute to the development of the country.

Mr Musah Adams, Head-teacher of Bagliga Presbyterian Primary School, thanked the Savana Signatures for selecting the school as a beneficiary of the programme saying it would enable the pupils to lead responsible lifestyles.
