Parents have been advised not to allow their children to follow them on their fishing expeditions, when they are sacked for not paying their school fees.
Mr. Stephen K. Tornyewonya Mac, Proprietor of Mac Tetteh Preparatory School at Dzodze in the Ketu North District, gave the advice when he addressed a cross-section of parents at the induction of first year students
Mr. Tornyewonya said managers of private schools become worried when they see parents allowing their children to follow them to farm and also to fish in deep waters, when they are sent home to collect their school fees.
The proprietor stressed: “You may see private schools doing business, but it is not all that lucrative in the remotest parts of the country,” adding that, “because the poor farmer could not afford to pay our reduced fees”.
He noted that the fees are the main source of income for the schools and that if parents refuse to settle for their children’s fees, it sometimes becomes difficult for the schools to employ qualified teachers, construct decent structures and provide school buses for the children.
Mr. Tornyewonya appealed to parents to pay their children’s fees regularly and promptly.
He also appealed to government to assist the less endowed private schools, in their quest to promote teaching and learning.
The proprietor advised students to be law-abiding, in order not to be branded as agents of destruction, and also endeavor to take their lessons seriously.
