Adawso (E/R), Sept. 21, GNA – The Kwahu South District Chief Executive, Nana Owona Asante, has advised parents in fishing communities along the Volta Lake not to sacrifice their children’s education for their fishing activities by withdrawing them from school. He said they should rather provide the children with their basic needs and support them in their education to become responsible citizens for the nation’s development.
Nana Asante gave the advise, when he visited the Presbyterian Primary School at Adawso on Tuesday, as part of the “My First Day at School” celebration to mark basic schools opening of the academic year. The DCE said the introduction of the Capitation Grant and the Ghana School Feeding Programme in basic schools, showed the government’s determination to ensure the education of all children and urged parents to contribute their quota to supplement the efforts.
The Headteacher of the school, Mr Godwin Badu told the District Chief Executive that, fishermen and fishmongers withdraw their children from school every Tuesday to assist them in their fishing and marketing activities, thereby affecting teaching and learning in the school. The District Director of Education Nii Okaija Dinsey urged parents and communities to ensure effective participation in the country’s education delivery programme.
He said if parents failed to educate their children, they would grow to become social liabilities such as armed robbers to disturb their peace.
Items like biscuits and other confectioneries were distributed to the 28 pupils who had registered in Primary One at Adawso, 20 at Nkyenekyene and 32 at Hweehwee primary schools.
