Parents advised against maltreatment of children

Apowa (W/R) June 25 -GNA-Mr Kwame Armoo, Ahanta West District Director of the National Commission For Civic Education (NCCE), on Friday advised parents to avoid inhuman treatment of children for committing petty offences. He gave the advice at a Forum on the Child, organised by the NCCE and the World Vision Ghana for members of Child Rights Clubs of three Junior Secondary Schools at Apowa near Takoradi. The schools are Nazareth, Apowa Methodist and Arthur Fischer Catholic Junior Secondary Schools. Mr Armoo said it is against the constitution and the United Nations Rights of the Child, which states that children have the right to be protected from moral and physical hazards. He said the rights of children are to be respected and children have to be educated on these rights to prevent high incidence of abuse of the child.

Mr Armoo said education of children on their rights would help inculcate in them good moral values to enable them to become responsible citizens in future. He said the district office of the NCCE and the World Vision Ghana have embarked on a programme to educate pupils of basic schools on the rights of the child. Mr Armoo urged parents to maintain their children to protect them from moral hazards such as prostitution. Mr Oppong Boateng, a project manager of World Vision Ghana, said the World Vision and the district office of NCCE have embarked on a programme to educate pupils of basic schools on the rights of the child. He said so far, 28 out of 30 schools have been visited, adding that the days when children were intimidated and maltreated were over. Later, executive officers of Child Rights Clubs of the three schools were inaugurated. Mrs Agatha Danyie, an assistant director at the Ahanta West District Education Office, presided at the occasion.
