Painters-artists must use designs to project nation’s culture

Takoradi, Aug 21, GNA – Professor Reverend Daniel Nyarko, Rector of Takoradi Polytechnic, has admonished painters and artists to use local materials and the nation’s beautiful colours in their artistic work to project the nation’s culture to the outside world.

He stressed the importance of designing innovative works to attract tourists and foreigners to the country as they always wish to see new creations.

Prof. Rev. Nyarko noted that creative designs that portray the nation’s culture have the potential of earning foreign exchange for the nation, and, therefore, entreated painters and artists to package their works appropriately.

The rector was opening a painting exhibition mounted by six lecturers of the Painting Department of the Takoradi Polytechnic, on Friday.

He said art work should portray historical relics of the lives of the people for the archives to enable the next generation to know their national cultural heritage.

Art works also distinguish nations and their people and is educative and entertaining.

The six lecturers used local materials and colours of the national flag – red, yellow and green – for the designs depicting fishermen paddling their boats to catch fish, traders displaying their wares in the market and men wearing smock, among other lifestyles.

They also used covers of bottles, sticks, raffia, canes, clay, empty satchet water rubbers and calabashes.

The exhibitors are: Mr Andrews Arko, Mr Agbeshie Abraham, Mr Sangban Kennedy alias Sankens, Mr Rex Akinruntan, Mr Elijah Sofo and Mr Peter Amoako.
