Oye Lithur behind women’s demonstration against Agyapong – Boadu

Acting General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu has accused Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister Nana Oye Lithur of funding a women’s group protest to condemn Assin Central Member of Parliament Kennedy Agyapong over his comments against the Electoral Commission boss.

A group named Coalition of Concerned Women Tuesday July 12 thronged the Accra Sports Stadium asking parliament to crack the whip on Mr. Agyapong over what it described as his derogatory remarks against the chairperson of the Electoral Commission, Charlotte Osei.

However, speaking on Class FM’s current affairs programme, Inside Politics, Tuesday July 12, Mr Boadu alleged that Nana Oye Lithur doled out GHS100 each to members of the coalition to speak out against the MP.

“Those ones that were organised by Oye Lithur and given one million each? Mr Boadu said to host Moro Awudu when the topic of the women’s protest was raised on the show,” the NPP National Organiser asked.

“…I am telling you this is John Boadu speaking…I knew when the organisation was going on. Some women were organised given one million (GHS100) [each] to come and demonstrate.”

Asked what Nana Oye Lithur would achieve by organising women to demonstrate against the Assin Central MP, he said: “She is a lawyer and when a woman was beaten nothing was said by her. Now, another woman in her view has been assaulted or insulted or whatever and she is organising all over and has quickly found her voice.

“…We can’t move beyond it because it is orchestrated, it is our resources that was used for that.”

Mr Agyapong’s comments suggesting that EC Chair Charlotte Osei exchanged sexual favours for her position has been widely condemned by women’s groups, individuals, political parties, and civil society organisations.
