Overwhelming support for health insurance at West Akyem

Asamankese, May 29, GNA – The West Akyem District Assembly has completed a public education campaign on the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) throughout the district. In all, the task force set-up by the assembly visited about 136 communities to discuss the benefits of the scheme if they should register to join the scheme.

Addressing the District Assembly at Asamankese on Thursday, the District Chief Executive, Mr Umar Amoah, said the responses had been overwhelming.

He announced that a committee set up to run the scheme in the district had trained community collectors who have started registering people and also collecting the premium of 40,000 cedis per head per year as set by the district.

The DCE tasked Assembly Members to continue to spread the information about the scheme to the people in order for them to avail themselves of the benefits outlined by the government.

“We are more poised than ever to do away with the insensitive cash and carry system by the end of the year in the district”, he stressed. On sanitation, Mr Amoah informed members that the assembly had taken delivery of two sanitation vehicles supplied by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development under the Urban Five programme to help manage both solid and liquid waste collection. He reminded the members about the menace of insanitary environment and urged members to rekindle the communal spirit of their people in order to keep their electoral areas clean.

Mr Amoah said the assembly had also purchased sanitary equipment to support communities embark on clean-up exercises to prevent environmentally-based diseases like typhoid fever and malaria.
