Over 8billion cedis spent on education in Ahafo-Ano North

Tepa (Ash), May 4, GNA – The education sector in the Ahafo-Ano North District of Ashanti has benefited from projects worth over eight billion cedis from 2001 to date.

This has brought significant increase in enrolment at the basic and secondary school levels.

This was contained in a statement read by Mr Akwasi Adu-Poku, the acting District Chief Executive at a press briefing at Tepa on Tuesday, as part of measures to inform the public on projects and programmes being carried out in the district.

The projects include classroom blocks, teachers’ quarters, school latrines, school furniture and a library.

The rest include scholarship awards to basic school pupils, teacher trainees, secondary and tertiary students, best teacher award and Science, Technology and Mathematics Education (STME) clinics. Major part of the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) was used as counterpart funding for all the projects and programmes.

According to the statement, other sources of funding were from the HIPC fund, Community Water and Sanitation Project, GETFund, Social Investment Fund (SIF), Promotion for Partnership with Traditional Authorities (PPTAP), European Union (EU), Danish International Development Agency (DANIDA) and the Ministry of Education.

School enrolment at the primary, junior and secondary schools, which stood at 9,707, 3,100 and 519 respectively in the 2000/2001 academic year, increased to 10,748, 3,511 and 1,831 in that order in the 2004/2005 academic year. The DCE said the district assembly is a public institution that should be opened to public scrutiny and therefore, urged the people to contact the appropriate assembly officials to check on any information that may come to their notice and avoid depending on speculations.
