A survey conducted by the Centre for Democratic Development (CDD), a civil society institution has revealed that out of the 18.9 million Ghanaian populations, over 4.7 million indulge in bribery to key public services. This disturbing revelation stems from the fact that Ghanaians have difficulty in obtaining entitlements from the State, Police assistance, identity documents such as passport, drivers license, birth certificate and utilities like electricity, water, telephone service or fault repair.
“Over a quarter of Ghanaians use unofficial means (bribery and influence) to access key public services”, the survey report stated but adds that and as expected “only a minority of respondents would admit to paying or even to contemplating bribes to any of the listed categories of public officials”.
The burden of the survey according to CDD’s Executive Director, Prof E. Gyimah Boadi is to help assess is to help assess political and economic conditions in the country, the extent to which democracy and marker reforms were taking root to ascertain the impression about current political and economic developments in the country.
It sampled opinions of 1,200 respondents in all ten regions of the country.
