Over 300 displaced by rainstorm in three Atwima communities

Adankwame (Ash), April 9, GNA – More than 300 people including the chief of Adankwame, Nana Aboagye Ababio, have been rendered homeless following a severe rainstorm that hit three Atwima communities in Ashanti.

The storm destroyed the roofing and walls of 75 houses and school blocks in Adankwame, Asaman and Maabang. Mr James Adusei Sarkodie, Member of Parliament (MP) for Atwima-Nwabiagya, has visited the affected areas to console the victims.

At Maabang where 120 people were displaced, the rainstorm caused extensive damage to some poultry farms in the town. The Kwame Adusei farms and Akua Afriyie farms, the worst hit, lost more than 5,000 birds and 500 crates of eggs. The other affected farms were the Marinoff and Maabang Farms.

Mr Kwadwo Tuffour, Unit Committee Chairman of the town, appealed for support to repair the damaged local primary school block before school re-opens. The assembly member for Adankwame, Mr Yaw Adade, told the MP that electricity supply to the area has been disrupted because some electric poles fell.

He said the displaced were staying with friends and relatives. At Asaman, stationery and textbooks of the local primary school were destroyed when the roofing of the classroom block was ripped off.

Mr Sarkodie advised the communities to grow trees to serve as windbreaks and prevent the devastation caused to both life and property during rainstorms.
