Kuntnase (Ash), April 12, GNA- Ten thousand, eight hundred and nineteen people have, within the past 16 years received functional education through the Non-Formal Education Division (NFED) of the Ministry of Education in the Bosomtwe-Atwima-Kwanwoma district of Ashanti.
Mr John Alex Addai, the District Co-ordinator of the NFED who disclosed this, said, out of the figure, 8,472 were females and 2,347 were males.
He was speaking at a ceremony at which some items were presented to 31 facilitators of the NFED at Kuntanase on Wednesday. The items supplied by the World Bank included Wellington boots, raincoats and bags for classes to aid them in their work. Mr Addai said since 1990, the district NFED had trained 10 batches of functional literates with each batch spending two years to learn how to read and write.
He therefore, urged all communities to embrace the adult literacy programme, pointing out that a survey conducted among those who had received the training indicated that those running their own businesses had recorded significant improvement due to their ability to keep proper records of their businesses, while the farmers amongst them were recording increased yields due to the proper planning of their farming activities.
Mr Addai asked the facilitators to take their work seriously to enable them achieve the desired results, pointing out that though the work was voluntary; it entailed many challenges which needed sacrifice. He announced that 65 more facilitators would soon be recruited to handle the next batch of adult learners.
