The first payments of the Emergency Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) Cash Programme have been made to victims of the June 3rd disaster at Osu.
A total of 802 affected persons are expected to benefit from the payment at Osu with each receiving GHc100.
The Emergency LEAP intervention was announced in June this year by the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection as Government’s support to victims of the June 3rd disaster.
Categories of beneficiaries include households which lost a bread winner in the flood and fire disaster, as well as those who lost their businesses and other belongings.
Monitoring payment at the Osu Manhean School, the Deputy Minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection Honourable Alexander John Ackon noted that a total of 33,000 affected persons nationwide will benefit from the three -month Emergency LEAP Cash programme.
Giving a breakdown analysis of the beneficiaries, he said a total of 6,131 will benefit from Accra. This includes 1,277 at Odowna, 433 at Gbegbeyese, 681 at Glefe, 910 at Ashaiman, 802 at Osu, 657 at Teshie, 835 at Tema, 438 at Nungua, 318 at Adenta and 170 at Kaneshie.
Hon. Alexander Ackon intimated that all the figures the Ministry is working with were obtained from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO).
He urged beneficiaries to use the monies been paid to them profitably so they could vacate the current hardship they face in the soonest possible time.
Beneficiaries applauded the Government for the support although they believe it may not fully defray the cost they have incurred due to the floods.
