Cape Coast, Nov. 24, GNA- The opposition parties in Cape Coast, on Tuesday, boycotted a peace march, aimed at facilitating incident-free Presidential and Parliamentary polls in the Municipality on December 7.
The march, which was initiated by the Central Regional Police Command, the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE), and representatives of the political parties at a meeting on November 16, this year, was patronised by a handful of members and supporters of the New Patriotic Party.
They were joined by, personnel of the NCCE and the Ghana National Fire Service, amidst brass band music.
They held placards some of which read: “Tolerance Leads to National Unity”; “Respect Different Political Views”, “Join Us In The Fight Against Violent Campaigns” and “Let Not Party Politics Divide Us”. The Regional Director of the NCCE, Mr Frank Adoba who addressed the marchers later, asked politicians to use their political platforms to campaign on issues and not attack personalities.
Mr William Twumasi, the acting Regional Police Commander, gave the assurance that the Police would not compromise on ethics, and urged the political parties to conduct their activities within the confines of the law.
Mr Kofi Adams, Regional Youth Organiser of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), told newsmen, that the Party did not take part in the march due to security reasons.
He said the Municipal office of the NDC was recently vandalised and since then, no one has been arrested or prosecuted for the offence. Officials of the other opposition parties were not available for their comments.
