Akim Swedru, June 20, GNA – Final year Ophthalmologist Students from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have screened the eyes of about 640 people during an eight-day exercise at Akim Swedru and Akim Achease in the Birim South District. The programme which was sponsored jointly by the Akim Bosome Rural Bank at Akim Swedru and Mr Felix Owusu Agyepong, Minister of Parliamentary Affairs who is also the MP for Akim Swedru.
In an interview with the Ghana News Agency(GNA), the leader of the team, Mr Kwame Obeng-Nyarko, said the commonest eye diseases detected were pressbyopia and allergic conjunctivitis cataract, adding that the patients were either referred to the Akim Oda Government Hospital or the St. Dominic Hospital at Akwatia.
Mr Obeng-Nyarko said the programme was part of their data collection exercise for their project work and expressed his gratitude to the management of the Bank and Mr Owusu Agyepong for sponsoring the programme.
The Manager of the Bank, Mr Kwadwo Antwi Okyere, said the bank decided to sponsor the programme to enable as many people as possible suffering from eye diseases to be treated. He appealed to the people to heed the advice given them on basic eye care practices seriously to help maintain good eye sight at all times.
