“Operation Uniclean” Launched

The Greater Accra Regional Minister, Sheikh I.C. Quaye on Friday launched a mass weekend cleansing programme known as ‘Operation Uniclean- Together we clean’ in Accra.

The programme, which was to start yesterday, involves officers from AMA, assemblymen and all households that must ensure that their immediate surroundings are kept clean.

It would also ensure that the central business districts are kept clean.

The Minister said the Regional Co-ordinating Council, would monitor the exercise to ensure that all the targeted areas were cleaned.

He expressed regret that the AMA byelaws were not being enforced and appealed to the Assembly to make efforts to enforce them.

He stressed the need for public education on the programme and called on the media to help create awareness on the need for a good and clean environment.

He directed the AMA Co-ordinating Director to submit the list of names of those involved in waste management and cleansing of the city.

Hajia Alima Mahama, Deputy Minister for Local Government, said the ministry is to declare June 28 as sanitation day for the public to become more aware of the problems related to sanitation.
