Koforidua, Feb. 16, GNA – The Eastern Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has dispatched a total of 120 security officers drawn from the police, immigration service and the military to maintain law and order in five districts with concerns with nomadic herders.
The men were tasked to go and protect residents and farmers from nomadic herders in the Fanteakwa, Kwahu East, Upper Manya Krobo, Kwahu Afram Plains North and South Districts.
Launching the operation, Mr Antwi- Boasiako Sekyere, the outgoing Eastern Regional Minister, expressed worry about the activities of some Fulani in the region adding that all concerns would be addressed within the confines of the laws of the country.
He said the Regional Security Council would be more proactive this time round to avoid clashes between herdsmen and farmers in the region.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Angwubutoge Awuni, the Eastern Regional Police Commander, called on traditional authorities, especially those in areas where Fulani herders are, to allow the law enforcement agencies to execute their mandate.
He said the traditional authorities should not try to usurp the work of the security officers by taking the law into their own hands to fight the herdsmen.
