Only four perished in boat disaster – Police

Sunyani, May 12, GNA – The Brong Ahafo Regional Police Command stated on Thursday that only four persons are believed to have perished in the boat disaster on the Volta Lake last Sunday.

Assistant Commissioner A. K. Boateng told Ghana News Agency in a telephone conversation on Thursday only that one body, that of Ms. Joyce Agbozo, aged 20, who was travelling with the boyfriend, had been recovered so far.

“The boyfriend was able to swim to safety”, he said.

ACP Boateng said according to the boat owner, the boat started the journey with more than 60 passengers but some of them got down at their destinations on the way, leaving only 27 on board at the time the disaster struck.

Twenty-three of them were rescued, leaving the four, ACP Boateng added, saying a search was on-going for the bodies of the remaining three.

When the police at Yeji was contacted on Wednesday for details on the incident,

Chief Inspector Osei, officer in charge told GNA “we have sent all details on the disaster to the Regional Police headquarters in Sunyani and directed that all enquiries could be made there.
