One person dies in pontoon accident

One person died when the pontoon on which he was travelling on, with 10 others, from Ntonabona to Subon on River Bosom capsized in the Kwahu Afram Plains North District.

He has been identified as Kwame Ababio, aged 30.

The survivors were rescued by some fishermen who were fishing at the time and they were rushed to the Presbyterian Hospital at Donkorkrom, where they were treated and discharged.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency, the Donkorkrom Divisional Police Operation Commander, Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) David Mensah Amevor, said last Saturday, the pontoon was also carrying a truck loaded with charcoal, its nine loading boys, and the two operators of the pontoon – from Ntonaboma to Subon – at about 1630 hours.

He said, in the middle of their journey, water started entering the pontoon and suddenly it capsized. However, 10 of the passengers, who included the crew, were rescued by the fishermen.

The body of the eleventh person was later found, ASP Amevor said, while the people of Ntonaboma mobilised themselves and tried to send the pontoon to the banks of River Bosom.

However, it later sunk with the truck, with the registration number WR410 N.
