A total of 100 trees had been planted in some schools in the New Juaben Municipality to mark the World Environment Day celebration.
The exercise was organized by the Youth Challenge International (YCI), a Canadian Non- Governmental Organization (NGO) and the Young Men’s Christian Association (YMCA) in collaboration with Parks and Gardens and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The seedlings, which were provided by the Parks and Gardens, were planted in the Jumapo Methodist Junior High School (JHS), Islamic complex and the AME Zion schools.
Mr. Cyril Egar, Programmes Officer at the EPA, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) after the exercise that their aim was to inculcate the habit of tree planting in the young ones.
He urged pupils to nurture the trees and protect them from destruction by stray animals.
Mr. Egar appealed to them to educate others about the need to re-plant trees that had been cut down in their areas.
The YCI and Presbyterian schools in collaboration with Zoomlion also organized a clean-up exercise as a follow up activity to the environmental awareness conducted in the schools.**
