One dead in renewed skirmishes at Bawku

Bolgatanga, May 31, GNA – The murder of a man at the Animal Market in Bawku at about 16:15 hours on Sunday has sparked commotions and wild gunshots in the town.

The man, believed to be a driver, was reportedly shot dead when he tried to make a phone call after he spotted some men driving away cattle from the market.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in a telephone interview in Bolgatanga, Mr. Musah Abdulai, Bawku Municipal Chief Executive, said there was confusion in the town and that security personnel were being deployed to put the situation under control. According to Alhaji Hamidu Mahama, Upper East police Regional Commander, sporadic gunshots were heard last Friday night after some suspects who were alleged to be connected to the last conflict in Bawku, were released.

He said in order to forestall the escalation of violence, more military personnel were deployed to Bawku last Saturday. Alhaji Mahama was optimistic that the latest skirmishes would be brought under control by the close of Sunday. 31 May 09
