Omanhene survives assassination attempt

Ofoase (Ash), March 29, GNA – The Omanhene of Ofoase Traditional Area, Nana Ampratwum Tiefum II, survived an assassination attempt on Sunday, after he was shot three times by an unidentified gunman. He received bullet wounds on the left breast, leg and hands and is on admission at the Agogo Presbyterian Hospital. He is reported to be in stable condition.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Anthony Appiah, Asante-Akim South Commander, confirmed the incident to the Ghana News Agency and said there has not been any arrest. He said they have intensified their investigations to track down and bring to justice the attacker.

There has been uneasy calm at Ofoase following the decision by Nana Tiefum to install his blood sister, the queen of the area, drawing in the District Security Committee (DISEC), which ordered that the ceremony should be put on hold. Part of the Kingmakers, led by the Gyaase royal family, had vowed not to allow the Omanhene to have his way and had gone ahead to swear the Great Oath of the Asantehene (Ntamkesie) to restrain the planned installation.

Nana Tiefum and the Gyaase family had been summoned to appear before the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, on Monday, March 29, to determine the propriety or otherwise of the Omanhene’s decision, but the gunman struck before this could take place.

The assailant was said to have knocked at the door of the chief at dawn on Sunday and as he opened, he fired at him three times and escaped.
