Awulae Attibrukusu III, the Paramount Chief of Lower Axim Traditional Area, has expressed worry over the blind imitation of western lifestyles by most Ghanaian youth thereby neglecting the rich cultural values of the country.
He said the blind acceptance of such foreign cultural values had resulted in youth indiscipline, disrespect for the elderly and various acts of lawlessness being perpetrated by the youth, saying; “every country is known by its culture therefore we must tackle this issue with all seriousness.”
Awulae Attibrukusu, who is also the Vice President of the National House of Chiefs, called for concerted efforts by parents, chiefs, teachers and all well-meaning Ghanaians to inculcate sound moral values, respect for the elderly, environmental cleanliness and personal hygiene in the youth.
The Paramount Chief was speaking in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Axim, at the weekend during activities to round-up this year’s Kundum Festival.
The festival was on the theme: “Educating the Youth through Culture.” Sporting activities including an eight-kilometre marathon and soccer competition among eight electoral areas in the Nzema East Municipality was held to commemorate the festival sponsored by the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation.
Five out of the 200 participants who took part in the marathon received cash prices between GH¢ 150.00 and GH¢ 50.00 for placing first to fifth respectively.
The winner of the soccer competition received GH¢ 400.00 and a trophy while the runner-up received GH¢ 300.00 with the rest of the competing teams receiving GH¢ 150.00 each for their participation.
