OMA to demolish all unauthorized structures in Obuasi

Obuasi, Aug 27, GNA- The Obuasi Municipal Assembly (OMA) has set up a five-member demolition squad to rid the municipality of all unauthorized structures that have brought congestions in some parts of the township.

Mr Prince Agyei-Badu, Chairman of the Justice and Security Sub-Committee of the assembly is heading the squad, which would start its demolition exercise from the Obuaso Horsey Park area. Mr Joe Boampong, Municipal Chief Executive, who announced this at the second ordinary meeting of the assembly at Obuasi, said the rate at which unauthorized structures were springing up in the Obuasi Township called for concerted action by all to address the problem. “The rate at which unauthorized structures are springing up in Obuasi calls for a concerted action by all to address the situation before it becomes an albatross, hanging around our necks”, he stressed. The Municipal Chief Executive said after the exercise at the Horsey Park area, the demolition would be extended to other parts of the township.

Mr Boampong appealed to the assembly members to educate the people in their areas to acquire the necessary documents from the assembly before initiating building projects or put up temporary structures to avoid “falling foul with the law”.

Speaking to the GNA later, Mr Agyei-Badu said the squad was waiting for a towing vehicle from Kumasi before commencing the exercise. He said already all affected persons have been notified with letters to remove their structures before it becomes too late. He said as part of the beautification exercise in the Obuasi Township, traders near the Amangoase traffic lights area have been asked to clear their wares to enable AngloGold Ashanti to facelift the place. Mr Agyei-Badu said the demolition squad would at an appropriate time seek approval from the assembly to clear people whose trading activities had blocked vehicular movements.
