Old Vandals Association call for restraint

Accra, May 19, GNA – Old Vandals Association on Friday called on students of University of Ghana, Legon to exercise restraint in their fight against the new residential policy of in-out-out-out system which takes effect next academic year.

“We appeal to the students to exercise restraint while they fight for what they believe is a just cause,” Mr Kwesi Essel-Koomson, President of the Association, made up of former students of Commonwealth Hall of University of Ghana said in a statement. The association expressed concern over the unfortunate situation at Legon, and was dismayed over the manner students were confronting university authorities and ‘virtually wishing that they run the university the way they want since they are always demanding that their wishes be granted.’

The statement, which was issued after meetings with the student leadership at Commonwealth Hall and University authorities, condemned the ‘shit-bombing’ of examination centres by unknown persons as a means of forcing the university authorities to back down on their decision. “That, we believe, was barbaric and we hope it would never happen again,” the statement added.

The association condemned the call by Commonwealth Hall JCR President on the Vice Chancellor and Registrar of the university to resign and questioned whether the student body had the mandate to issue that statement.

It however, expressed concern about the situation where students were writing examination under tight security, although it agreed that there was no option as there was threat to life and indications that students wanted to disrupt the examinations. 19 May 07
