Okyenhene calls for review of laws governing lands

Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, the Okyenhene, has called for the review of the Chapter 21 of the 1992 Constitution, to grant traditional authorities, the power to manage lands.

He said, to have an effective management of lands in the country, there must be ownership at the local level.

Osagyefo Amoatia made the call at the Annual Divisional Seminar of the Valuation and Estate Surveying Division of the Ghana Institutions of Surveyors, on the theme: “Challenges to efficient Land Management in Ghana,” in Koforidua.

He asked why 55 per cent of revenue accruing from stool lands belonging to chiefs and the people are allocated to the assemblies who have not established and accounted for what they do with that money to the local people.

Mr Ekow Budu-Anguah, President of Valuation and Estate Surveying Division (VES) said the seminar would focus on small scale mining and matters relating to stool lands.

Mr Kumordzi Sambo, Regional Coordinating Director said land management in the country is faced with a lot of challenges including, multiple transactions, environmental degradation and boundary disputes.

Ms Maame Ama Edumadze-Acquah, Regional VES Chairperson said, the lack of accountability, probity and transparency by the customary managers of land in a rapidly changing environment is worrying.

She said all developments in the country are land based hence the need to ensure good and sustainable management of the resource for future generations.
