Okudzeto Ablakwa’s Hometown Collapses

Over twenty-two (22) communities including Adidome, the hometown of Deputy Information Minster, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and ten (10) public schools in the North – Tongu district of the Volta Region were ripped off by a heavy downpour on Sunday leaving thousands of people homeless.

The almost six hours long rainstorm which started around 1 p.m. and ended in the latter part of 6 p.m., was clamoured by thunderstorms and lightening.

The rainstorm destroyed several buildings, properties worth several thousands of Ghana cedis, personal belongings and lot farms and food crops leaving most victims top perch with friends and relatives waiting for ‘miraculous’ intervention from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other Non Governmental Organisations (NGO).

Some of the victims in an interview with The Moment newspaper after the disaster noted that this year’s downpour has destroyed more properties of individuals as it started with very strong wind and thunderstorm destroying several homes and properties, the value of which is yet to be ascertained by the District National Disaster management Organisation.

Some of the victims went further to complain that over the years government does not provide them with the needed materials like the iron sheets but rather second hand clothes and foodstuffs.

They said the district is well known for the production of major agriculture produce in both large and small quantities, hence appealing to Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) to collaborate with government to beef up their intervention as they called “We need iron sheets to secure shelter first”.
