Oguaa and Elmina go gay after declaration of Presidential results

Hundreds of supporters and members of the National Democratic Congress as well as residents in Cape Coast and Elmina poured onto the streets on Sunday night amidst singing and dancing, celebrating the victory of President John Dramani Mahama moments after the results were declared. Taxi cabs and private vehicles were seen on the streets tooting their horns in celebration as well as some motorbike riders. Drinking bars and entertainment spots bounced back to life playing loud music.

Some people were seen in groups discussing the outcome of the elections whiles others glued to their television and radio sets listing to happenings across the nation.

President Mahama won the election with 5,574,761 votes representing 50.70% as against his major opponent Nana Akufo-Addo who had 5,248,898 votes representing 47.74%.

Prior to the declaration of the results, the streets were empty and quiet as residents were anxiously awaiting the results from Dr. Kojo Afari Gyan, Chairman of the Electoral Commission.

Some of the celebrants were clad in NDC party colours, whilst others were in white clothes to signify their joy. The party’s popular slogans, “Edey bee keke” and “Onetouch”, characterized the celebration virtually on the lips of every jubilant amidst the sounds of ‘vuvuzelas’.

A few people the GNA spoke with in their excitement said they were happy that President Mahama had won and that he was the right person to rule the country.

Others, however, believed the celebration should be done in moderation because Monday is a working day.
