Kumasi, Jan. 15, GNA – Madam Elizabeth Agyemang, Member of Parliament (MP) for Oforikrom in Kumasi on Friday donated variety of items worth 390 million cedis to some educational institutions, security agencies and social clubs in her constituency.
The beneficiary institutions were 20 basic schools, the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Oforikrom and KNUST police stations and the Oforikrom Ladies Football Club. The basic schools received a tabletop fridge and a set of living room furniture each for their offices.
The KNUST team, which is currently preparing for the Ghana University Students Association (GUNSA) games received three sets of jerseys, four footballs, set of boots and hose as well as table tennis balls.
The eight halls of the university also received a set of jerseys and three footballs each while the Oforikrom Ladies Football Club received a set of jerseys and three footballs.
The KNUST and Oforikrom police stations received a solar lamp each. Madam Agyemang said the presentation was the first batch of items, as the remaining would be done in May to cover 13 other basic schools, which could not be captured in the first batch.
The MP, a teacher by profession said her interest was heightened by the poor conditions under which most teachers worked and said the presentation would, however, raise the welfare of the teachers in their day-to-day activities and also help improve upon sports in the constituency.
Mr Newman Twumasi Amponsah, Kumasi Metropolitan Director of Education, said since education was the bedrock of development all should endeavour to complement government effort of providing quality education since the lack of amenities in schools dampened the spirit of teachers.
He called on the recipient schools to take good care of the items and develop good maintenance culture for it to last longer and commended the MP for the gesture.
Mr Cobby Yebo-Ocran, Deputy Registrar in-charge of Academic Affairs at the KNUST, who chaired the function, called on the MP to institute an education fund to help brilliant but needy children in the constituency. In a related development, the MP commissioned two toilets at Emena and Kokoben built at a total cost of 200 million cedis.
