Pressure group, OccupyGhana, has called on “well meaning Ghanaians” to observe a “Red Friday” by wearing red armbands on Friday, 20th March, 2015 to express their displeasure about the shoddy manner in which the Woyome scandal has been handled by the Attorney General.
A statement by the group bemoaned government’s inability to tackling the challenges confronting the nation, adding that Ghanaians must rise to ensure that the Gh¢ 51.2 million wrongfully paid to businessman Alfred Woyome is retrieved.
“OccupyGhana notes with great displeasure the declining state of affairs in the country coupled with the insensitivity and the lackluster attitude of the leadership of the country and some public servants to solving the many critical challenges that has bedeviled the nation”.
“OccupyGhana having closely followed proceedings in the woyomegate scandal and matters arising therefrom, strongly believes that the half-hearted prosecution and inability to retrieve monies aside, it is a cardinal principle of democratic governance that a person must not put herself or be put in a position where her public duty is in conflict with her personal interest.
“The Attorney-General has been implicated in the ‘Woyome et al’ judgment debt saga. It has also come to light that the Attorney General’s office did in fact leak certain documents to the beleaguered businessman to aid him secure his acquittal,” the statement said.
The group added that the recent acquittal and discharge of Mr. Woyome from criminal prosecution is due to the half-hearted prosecution mounted by the state and this calls into question the Attorney-General’s self interest and commitment to duty.
According to the pressure group, the Attorney General, Marietta Brew Appiah-Oppong has also unable to retrieve the money from Woyome because her law firm benefitted from the judgment debt.
