Occupy Flagstaff House yielded results – Nana Akwasi Awuah

The organiser for Occupy Flagstaff House, a demonstration held in July 2014 against the economic hardships the nation was facing at the time says he is not going to stop demanding for accountability from government or fighting corruption as the protest which yielded some results was a great motivation to him and others.

Nana Akwasi Awuah says although they faced a lot of resistance from the police during the protest, the outcome was positive as the government of the day responded to their petition with “a series of press conferences trying to address the issues we had raised in our petition and so it started a new discourse, a new engagement altogether and I think that it was worth it”.

He stated that although he doesn’t know what the future holds, he was going to continue advocating for good governance because for him “the whole motivation is that there is an inextricable link between good governance and happiness” adding that “if the people are happy it will depend on how they are being governed”.

He said he was prepared to protest alone if no one else turned up but was overwhelmed by the turn out.

Nana Awuah mentioned that he organised the protest because he was tired of ranting about the many things that were not going on well in the county on social media without seeing any improvement.

He said after witnessing and experiencing several challenges such as fuel and water shortages he decided he wasn’t going to put up another post on social media to complain but he was going to “take action”.
