Obtaining Loans, Other Credit Banks Demand Aids Test? Officials Deny Allegation

Some banks and credit-lending institutions in the country now demand proof of HIV/AIDS test from customers before approving their loan applications.

Nana Antwi Berko, Brong-Ahafo Regional Manager of Medilab Diagnostic Service, a private laboratory text provider, disclosed this in Sunyani.

He did not provide the names of the financial institutions but said the practice was a discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS.

He was speaking at a one-day sensitization workshop on HIV/AIDS organized by the Youth Ministry of Brong-Ahafo Presbytery of the Presbyterian Church.

Meanwhile officials of some banks contacted by the GHANAIAN TIMES expressed shock and dismay at the allegation, insisting that it was false.

Mr. W. Abra-Appiah, Managing Director of Amalgamated Bank Limited, described the report as very unfortunate, adding that “it is impossible”.
