NYEP recruits youth as Community Protection Assistants

Bolgatanga, May 21, GNA – Some 517 youth have been recruited as Community Protection Assistants under the National Youth Employment Programme (NYEP).

The youth, who passed out at a graduation ceremony in Bolgatanga on Thursday, underwent six weeks training at the Pwalugu Police Training School in Bolgatanga. They were taken through Community Policing, Human Rights and Citizenship, Duties of Security men, powers of arrest and search and crime scene management.

Others include Traffic Management, English Language, First Aid and HIV/AIDS, Foot and Mobile patrols, District Assembly bylaws and Law of evidence.

In a speech read for her the Minister of Youth and Sports, Ms Akua Sena Dansua, she said the passing out of the first batch of the recruits marked an important step NYEP had taken. Ms Dansua said past beneficiaries of the Community Protection Police had been screened and would be recruited into the security services and private security companies.

She said at the end of the two-year service period, the Police Administration would absorb a percentage of the Community Protection Assistants when doing general recruitment for the Police Service. The Upper East Deputy Regional Minister, Mrs. Lucy Awuni, appealed to Community Protection Assistants from all the regions to accept posting to wherever they would be posted to. The Upper East Police Commander, Assistant Commissioner of Police Brigit Oduro commended the recruits for exhibiting high discipline during their training.
