NYC commends youth for contribution towards successful elections

Sekondi, Dec. 13, GNA – Ghanaian youth has been commended for helping to ensure a successful, violence-free and orderly general elections in the country on December 7.

Mr Emmanuel P. Assan, Western Regional Coordinator of the National Youth Council (NYC), who made the commendation, said the success of the polls could be attributed to the Ghanaian youth, who assisted before, during and after the elections.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in an interview at Sekondi on Monday, he said, while some of the youth worked as polling agents, others assisted as drivers, supervisors, coordinators, and observers. They refused to engage in acts that could have marred the electoral process.

Mr Assan said many of the youth were the first to cast their votes and witnessed the counting of the votes without engaging in open fights adding, “This signifies a growing understanding of the political and democratic institutions in Ghana”.

He, therefore, appealed to the youth to learn more about the country’s democratic process to enable them to make meaningful inputs towards its development in the country.

The Youth Coordinator cautioned the youth not to allow selfish politicians to use them to advance their political career and create confusion or acts that could destabilise the country’s democratic process.

Mr Assan appealed to the youth in the northern parts of the country not to take up arms and fight each other, but rather, they should learn to live in peace among themselves.

He said peace was necessary for development, but could not take place in areas of conflict, tension and confusion.

“Such situations would not facilitate the development of the potentials and skills of the youth, who are the future leaders” he stressed. Mr Assan said the NYC would continue to assist in the development of the talents, skills and create employment opportunities for the youth in every part of the country.
