Nyaho Medical Centre holds blood donation exercise

The Nyaho Medical Centre on Saturday held a blood donation exercise to raise awareness for the public to donate blood voluntarily to help save lives.

The donation which was on the theme: “Help Save a Life + Give the Gift of Blood” started at 0800 hours in Accra.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), Dr Elikem Tamakloe, Managing Director, of the Centre observed that the blood donation, which would be an annual project, forms part of activities making the medical facility’s 45 years anniversary.

“This is also our small corporate social responsibility to respond to the needs of the less-privileged in the society, especially in the area of health as well as helping to replenish the National Blood Bank especially when the Christmas festivities are approaching,” he said.

Dr Tamakloe said the target is to get 100 voluntary donors to make the exercise a success with 100 units of blood also being targeted.

He advised the public to donate blood voluntarily to help save lives.

Mr Roger Yaw Cudjoe Adu, Biomedical Scientist, Head of Blood Bank, Ridge Regional Hospital, lauded the Centre for the exercise, which said would save lives in the near future.

He noted that the donation of blood was a worthy cause as well as an utmost gift to society at all times.

He urged the public to voluntarily donate especially when they are 18 years and above to assist the entire country.

He, however, added that “Donors does not need to know their blood groups before donating, but instead, blood donation is a collective responsibility.”

As part of activities marking the anniversary celebration, a community health screening exercise was held for the people of Amasaman.

Mr Fred Twum-Barimah, Head of Diagnostics, Nyaho Medical Centre told the GNA, the health screening clinic which involved blood test, malaria, among other medical examinations aimed at giving life back to the community.

Donors also had the privilege of undergoing free medical screening.
