Nurses to decide way forward today

The Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA) will hold an emergency meeting later today, Friday, 11 November on whether to call off their strike after the National Labour Commission (NLC) directed them to resume work or face court action.

The nurses withdrew their services after raising issues with their delayed salary arrears, posting of graduate nurses, sale of upgrading forms, and inadequate logistics for public health facilities across the country.

NLC has, however, mounted intense pressure on the nurses to go back to post, describing their action as illegal.

But speaking to Class News, the General Secretary of the association, Perpetual Ofori Ampofo, said the body would hold a crunch meeting to decide the next line of action.

“In our encounter with the National Labour Commission, we said that we represent constituents and it will be very proper that we engage them before we take any decision and we have called for an emergency national council meeting. All the representatives are coming from all over the country and once the meeting is done, we will have a clear way forward,” she stated.

“I‘m not saying the NLC is wrong in saying what it is saying. Whether right or wrong, I’m not the one to judge the NLC, they are doing their work, we are also representing our constituents and we need to do the right thing as a union. We’re going to discuss the issue and we will give a clear way forward on whatever decisions we take.”
