A 27-year-old nurse, Ibrahim Apah, was on Monday fined Ghc2,400 by a Cape Coast Circuit Court for burning items worth Ghc16,194 in his ex-girlfriend’s apartment at Abura, a suburb of Cape Coast.
Apah pleaded guilty to causing unlawful damage, and would go to prison for 36 months in default.
Prosecuting, Police Chief Inspector Hevi, told the court presided over by Mrs. Eva Bannerman Williams that the complainant and Apah who dated for almost a year decided to end the relationship, due to religious differences.
He said Apah who did not take kindly to the decision, on several occasions, threatened to cause harm to the complainant if she did not rescind her decision.
Chief Inspector Hevi said, in the late hours of December 31, last year, Apah who found out that the complainant was away, went to her apartment and set the place ablaze.
Chief Inspector Hevi said the entire room would have been burnt into ashes if not for the timely intervention by personnel from the Fire Service.
He said a complaint was lodged at the Kotokuraba Police station and Apah who went into hiding for about a month was later arrested and charged with the offence.
In another development, a 37-year-old taxi driver, Kwesi Twum, was remanded into police custody by the same court for allegedly raping a 17-year-old student of Sammo Senior High School in the Central Region.
Twum who pleaded not guilty, will re-appear on Tuesday, May 20.
Chief Police Inspector Hevi told the court that Twum who drives the victim to and from school each day, picked her up very late from school on Monday January 6, and on their way home, drove the car into a bush and forcefully had sex with her in the car.
He said Twum after the act, he warned the victim not to disclose the incident to anyone or else she will die.
He said the mother of the victim who detected the strange behaviour of the victim any time the driver came to pick her to school, questioned her and she narrated the ordeal she went through.
Chief Inspector Hevi said a complaint was lodged at the Police Station and later at the Domestic Violent and Victim Support Unit (DVVSU), which led to the arrest of the accused person.
