Accra, Sept. 17, GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Wednesday said the New Partnership for African Development (NEPAD) document should be reshaped to make it more relevant to suit African conditions.
This was contained in a 10-point communiqu=E9 adopted by the Union at a four-day annual congress held recently in Tamale on the theme: “Quality Education for All, the Conduit for NEPAD Success”. The communiqu=E9 read by Mr Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, President of NUGS, at a press conference in Accra, said the Union called on the government to revamp, renovate and build new structures for all tertiary institutions in the country, particularly, the Medical School of the University of Development Studies in Tamale.
NUGS also called on government to, as a matter of urgency to dispatch the 30 per cent rebate of student fees to avert “a possible nationwide student unrest”.
The Union urged government to raise the existing students loan from two million cedis to four million cedis for the 2003/2004 academic year to “match the high cost of living”.
On the Ghana Education Trust Fund (GETFund), the NUGS said it was “diametrically” opposed to government’s purported figure of 208 billion cedis, as being the arrears, saying the actual arrears should be 411 billion cedis.
It called on government to come out clearly with the correct figures.
The Communiqu=E9 again urged government to come out with the new senior secondary school (SSS) fees as soon as possible to spare heads of schools “the present dilemma they find themselves in” saying, the SSS one admission letters should be released unconditionally. It said while the activities of the National Commission of Civic Education must be intensified to prevent conflict in society, government must also ensure equitable distribution of resources.
