Cape Coast (C/R) May 10 GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) has appealed to the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) not to embark on its intended strike to back their demand for better salaries and conditions of service.
Mr Emmanuel Domson, National President of NUGS, who made the appeal on Tuesday, said such an action would inevitably distract academic work at the universities. He was speaking at the launching of “NUGS’ Nation-wide Campaign To Solicit Support For The Ghana Education Trust Fund” (GECF) at Cape Coast under the theme, “Support The Fund Invest In Education”.
Mr Domson said reports reaching the NUGS indicate that UTAG has scheduled a meeting for Thursday, during which it would decide whether to embark on an industrial action to back earlier demand for improved working conditions or not. He called on the government to enter into negotiations with UTAG to avert the intended action.
Efforts to get UTAG Executives of the Cape Coast University Branch to comment on the issue were not successful, as none of them was available. However, a notice inviting all members “to an emergency meeting on Thursday to discuss the latest on salaries and conditions of service” has been posted on notice boards at the University.
