NUGS To Honour Kufour, Others

The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) in collaboration with all National Students Union in the West African sub-region is organising a students? forum towards the reactivation of the defunct West African Students Union (WASU), and also to honour some personalities and organisations for their contribution to education, student-related issues, and youth welfare.

The event will come off at the International Conference Centre from May 24 to May 30 under the theme: ?The ECOWAS Protocol and NEPAD-The Place of the West African Student Union (WASU)?. About ten delegates each from 15 ECOWAS countries are expected to take part in the week long event.

NUGS President Kenneth Abotsi disclosed the programme at a press conference held in Accra last week. Among the personalities short listed is President John Agyekum Kufour of Ghana, ECOWAS Chairman, for his outstanding efforts to sustain peace in the sub-region. Others include Otumfuo Osei Tutu II (Asantehene), Apostle Dr Kwodwo Safo of Christ Reformed Mission Kristo Asafo, and Dr K.B. Asante a retired educationist for their immense contributions to the upliftment of education in Ghana.

Foreign personalities to be honoured include Alhaji Ahmadu Adamu Muazu and Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Executive Governors of Bauchi and Lagos States respectively in the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Kenneth Abotsi also addressed some of the issues affecting students in Ghana which included the delay in payment of student loans and the crisis at the Ghana Institute of Journalism. He called for the amendment of the act establishing the institute to enable it to be placed under the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports.

He called on the government and parliament to speed up the process ?before we are compelled in the spirit of solidarity to march to any quarters for the resolution of his problem.? He also called for the resignation of Kweku Amponsah the Institute?s Registrar.
