Accra, Sept. 21, GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Thursday criticised those calling for the resignation of Road Transportation Minister, Dr Richard Anane saying such calls were premature.
“NUGS unequivocally condemns in no uncertain terms the very pre-mature and prejudiced calls for the resignation of the Minister of Transportation…,” it said in a statement signed by Mr Fred Abogo, Co-ordinating Secretary and Abdulai A. Rahaman, Press and Information Secretary.
“The Union is particularly dismayed about the call for the resignation of the Minister when he is challenging the findings of the CHRAJ and especially so when the President of the Republic of Ghana has directed the Chief Legal Officer of the Government, Attorney-General, to critically study the findings of CHRAJ and advise the Government as such,” NUGS said.
NUGS said it was, therefore, calling on all civil society groups, democratic institutions and the general citizenry “to remain calm, resolute and allow the due process and institutions of State to function”.
NUGS said it upheld the principle of the rule of law and respected the institutions of State in a democratic dispensation. In addition, it also believed in the fact that no citizen of the land was above the law. However, it said, “in our attempt to check public officers, we (should) not get into the temptation of trampling on their fundamental human rights, unfairly damage their hard won reputation and finally bring their integrity into disrepute”.
