NUGS condemns body search on female students

Accra, July 11, GNA – The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Wednesday described the alleged inspection of the private parts of students of St. Louis Training College in Kumasi as uncalled for and a

clear violation of their fundamental human rights. “NUGS after a careful observation and critical analysis has established beyond reasonable doubt that the action of the school authorities was a clear contravention of the laws establishing Teacher Training Colleges in Ghana and must be condemned in the highest possible terms,” it said.

A release signed by Mr. William Yamoah, President of the NUGS, said it was unfortunate that the College could carry out unauthorized search on innocent ladies to find out a student who had allegedly carried out an abortion.

The Union therefore called for the immediate interdiction of all staff involved in the act to pave way for more independent investigations into the matter and the culprits dealt with.

It further called on the Ghana Education Service (GES) and the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports to review the laws establishing training colleges in the country in order to train teachers who would be confident and balanced in their handling of pupils in schools.
