Social Teacher Workshop Let’s use local language to teach at pre-school and lower primary

Antoakrom (Ash), Feb 5, GNA – Mr Charles Oti-Prempeh, the District Chief Executive for Amansie West, has advocated the use of local language for teaching at the pre-school and lower primary levels. He said there should be no doubt that this could significantly h= elp the children, who are in their formative years to develop solid education foundation. Mr Oti-Prempeh was closing a one-week workshop on “The National Language Programme” for teachers and circuit supervisors in the district at Antoakrom. It was part of the on-going discussion of the appropriate medium= of communication for pre-school and the lower primary children. The workshop was organized by the Ghana Education Service (GES) and sponsored by the United States Agency for International Development (USAI= D). Mr Oti-Prempeh said the situation where a child’s ability to mention the names of some items in the English language has become the standard test for admission into pre-schools was totally unacceptable.

This he said must be rejected if the vision of education for al= l was to be realized. He said the district assembly would build new classroom blocks and refurbish old ones to enhance academic work in the area. The assembly had already procured 1,000 bags of cement and 50 bundles of roofing sheets towards this. Mr Oti-Prempeh said attention was also being focused on the teaching an= d learning of Information Communication Technology (ICT). 05 Feb 10
