NSD is not a funfair – Minister

The Deputy Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Mr Emmanuel Agyekum, says the National Sanitation Day (NSD) is not a funfair.

He said it is an exercise which seeks to educate and change the attitude of citizens on sanitation and the environment.

He explained that, it is a national exercise to create awareness for the citizens to understand the challenges that filth could cause and how to responsibly deal with it.

Mr Agyekum was speaking at Akim Oda, as part of a sensitisation tour by the Ministry and the Eastern Regional Coordinating Council to mobilise people to participate in the fifth NSD exercise on Easter Saturday which is being hosted by the region.

He indicated that, Ghana is ranked among the last 10 filthiest countries in the world and said the bane must be overturn by raising the level of environmental cleanliness.

He congratulated the Birim Central Municipality for the good works on previous sanitation days and their preparedness for the 5th NSD.

The Municipal Chief Executive, Mr Kwabena Nkansah Asare indicated that, the assembly is ready for the exercise.

At Ofoase in the Akyemansa District, the Deputy Eastern Regional Minister, Ms Mavis Ama Frimpong, urged the chiefs, people and heads of institution to turn up massively on Saturday and all other NSDs to keep their environments clean.

She called on the people to see the sanitation day as a national exercise, adding that, there is the need for hard work hard to sustain the programme.

Mr Tom Budu, the District Chief Executive (DCE), indicated that, the assembly during previous exercises identified a community and all the communities join to clean up the place.

Mr Emmanuel Kwakye, DCE for Birim South, said, the chiefs and people have assured the district of their support for the NSD.
