NRSC calls for accident-free Easter

Mr Sebastian Akyeampong, Volta Regional Manager of the National Road Safety Commission (NRSC) on Friday urged drivers in the Volta Region to work towards reducing the 169 road accidents recorded during the Easter festivities last year.

“March and April are usually very difficult periods for us because of the festivities and we hope that our drivers will remain professional to record fewer accident cases,” he said.

Mr Akyeampong, in an interview with the GNA in Ho commended drivers in the Region for recording a total of 43 road crashes during Christmas in 2011 as against 187 for the same period in 2012.

He observed that road accidents on festive occasions were largely due to errors committed by drivers in their haste to maximise earnings and asked them to be safety conscious.

Mr Akyeampong called on the police to be strict in ensuring that only road worthy vehicles were on the roads.

He also urged the various driver unions and district road safety committees to put mechanisms in place to ensure professionalism on the road during the period.
