NPP to increase retirement age for other ranks in GAF by 5 years

The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has disclosed that an Akufo Addo government will increase the number of years other ranks (Men) serve in the Ghana Armed Forces to thirty (30) years when the party is voted into power come December 7 elections.

It has been the convention that other ranks serve in the Ghana Armed Forces for a total of 25 years, but the NPP is set to ensure five more years is added to the current period of service.

This was disclosed by Chairman of the NPP Committee on Interior and Security, Dominic Nitiwul at Press conference held on Sunday in Accra.

He noted that this review will mean that unless a serving soldier wants to voluntarily retire from the service, he or she has the opportunity of rendering dedicated service to this country for 30 years.

“If you go at 20 years, you’ll retire at 50 years, it is just right and equitable that if a civil servant is allowed to retire at 60 years, you don’t ask somebody in the army to retire at 45 years if he entered at 20 years and then he goes home and he has nothing to do.”

He noted that the NPP remains committed to build a new Military Hospital in Tamale to Serve the Northern Command and will also provide accommodation for both the Ghana Armed Forces and the Police, through what the party calls Baracks Regeneration Programme where men and women in all the security services who are housed by the state will be given decent accommodation.
