The largest opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has given indications that it will boycott the Kumbungu by-election.
The Electoral Commission (EC) has set Tuesday, 30th April, 2013, to hold the by-election in the Kumbungu Constituency in the Northern region, in accordance with Article 112(5) of the Constitution as amended by section 3 of Act 527.
The seat became vacant after Member of Parliament for the Constituency, Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni, abdicated it following his appointment as the Secretary-General of African, Caribbean and Pacific States.
A statement issued by the EC and signed by its Chairman Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan said the Commission will take nominations for the said by-election on Tuesday, 16th and Wednesday 17th April 2013, at the district office of the Commission at Kumbungu District Assembly.
But the NPP says it is likely to boycott the by-election. The party is on record to have stated that due to their pending Supreme Court case, they will never participate in any election organised by the EC.
The NPP leadership also stated that they do not trust the EC hence their decision to boycott any elections organised by them.
The NPP recently boycotted the Akatsi and Buem by- elections which were held on February 5 and 26 respectively.
