The President?s Spokesman, Kwabena Agyepong has stated that the NPP is not likely to advance a case for the election of chief executives at the local government level.
While in opposition the ruling party advocated the election of district, municipal and metropolitan chief executives so they can be held accountable to the people.
Mr. Agyepong said after studying the political landscape his governament has discarded the notion.
Speaking on Joy FM the Presidential spokesperson said it would be politically imprudent to elect chief executive at the local government level.
? Of course it was in our 1996 manifesto but I think there is a certain mood of change in that aspect of electing DCE?s, it can have been a hasty decision in situations such as in areas where the party is not strong, you can have some intransigent DCEs who do not have the same political philosophy and therefore make sure that all your polices are run down in those areas?, he said.
He said the president who have been mandated by the people have to have agents in all the territories of the country.
Another proposal, which the NPP initially supported but appears to be silent on now, is the vetting of chief executives at the local level.
