Koforidua, Jan. 11, GNA – The Eastern Region Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Yaw Gyekye-Amoabeng, has called on members of the party to agree to disagree on issues in order not to curtail the chance of winning the 2008 elections.
Referring to the large number of aspirants for the flagbearership of the party that had received mixed reactions from top party members including the President and the senior members of the party, he said the number could be a threat to the party’s retention of power. He said this at Koforidua on Wednesday when he interacted with the media in the Eastern Region to express the party’s gratitude to the media for their excellent performance during the ended delegates’ conference of the party.
He spoke against any move by any losing aspirant to form another party and called for unity to rally behind whoever wins to ensure victory in 2008.
Mr Amoabeng said as a means to reduce the number of aspirants, the leadership of the NPP in the region would meet the aspirants from the region to discuss the possibility of the region presenting one presidential aspirant.
He said he was convinced that despite the large number of aspirants, the party could come out with a leader who would be acceptable to the party and Ghanaians.
Mr Amoabeng said the government, under the leadership of President John Agyekum Kufuor, had performed credibly and Ghanaians had no alternative than to vote for it to continue with the good works. The Chairman commended the media for their fair reportage before, during and after the just ended conference at Koforidua and stressed the need for constant interaction between the press and the party.
