NPP puts journalists in danger

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) National Chairman Jake Obestebi-Lamptey’s outrageous claims that some pressmen and their media helped in rigging the elections for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) continue to endanger the lives of journalists in the country with the latest violent attack being visited on two journalists with TV3.

Last Monday, Andy Ntiamoah was attacked and nearly beaten to pulp by some irate NPP supporters, when he appeared at the NPP headquarters to work.

On Tuesday, another staff of TV3, Samuel Boadi, a cameraman, was also beaten up with sticks, stoned, slapped and kicked around like a football by angry NPP supporters at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle-Accra, where the party had converged to publicly reject the 2012 election results, Mr Boadi was rushed to the hospital.

Prior to Mr Boadi, being beaten up, the NPP hooligans had stabbed a man wearing an NDC ‘T’-Shirt at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle. There are conflicting reports that the stabbed man has died.

The Greater Accra Police Commander, DCOP Patrick Timbilla, has confirmed the armed attack on the poor man.

Joy News’ Manasseh Awuni Azuri, had to position himself at a vantage area at the Nkrumah Circle-for his own safety-the crowd was charged and had become increasingly violent. They were later addressed by Kennedy Agyapong and Anthony Karbo.

At Madina, a suburb of Accra, some jubilant NDC supporters celebrating the victory of the President elect, were injured by some NPP thugs who run a vehicle through them, injuring two in the process.

The Herald has learnt that the party yesterday intended to use their gathering at the ‘Obra Spot’ to test the waters for a possible ‘red’ revolution to mount pressure on the government for a power-sharing venture.

So far, staff of Joy Fm and Metro TV, have separately been attacked following Jake Obestebi-Lamptey’s venomous suggestion that the two media houses rigged the elections for the NDC. Peace FM, which he also mentioned, is yet to record any such attack on any of its journalists.

One broadcast journalists, Naa Kwarley Quartey, was also attacked by party hooligans at Osu near the Ghana Football Association (GFA). The Windscreen of her press car was smashed in the process.
